We cut a 1/4" 7x19 Stainless steel cable.  What cutter do you recommend for this cable/wire rope?

1 Answer
Generally speaking we would not recommend an impact cutter like this for doing clean, repetitive cuts.  A bench cutter is a great choice if you're doing multiple cuts and plan to set up a work station.  The 20" aluminum handle cutters would be better if you plan to use the cutters in the field, different locations, different jobs, etc.  See product links below.

Will it cut 3/4'' swaged cable?
1 Answer
These cutters are rated only for cutting general purpose wire rope in the 6x19, 6x25 and 6x36 classes.  It may cut 3/4" swaged, but how long the blade and dies hold up is questionable to say the least.

We cut 1/4" and 5/16" galv and stainless cable. Will this make a clean cut on them?
1 Answer
Not necessarily; this type of cutter relies and brute force to make the cut.  You would be better off using a two-handle cutter such as the HIT 20" or HIT 26" model.  Or you could even look at the Felco brand which costs more, but is considered the best on the market.  Either brand is designed to give you a nice, clean cut which makes it much easier to install fittings or thread the wire rope through a given object.

I intend to cut #16 "Jack-Chain". This cutter looks as though it may be ideal as a manual product. A consideration may be how tiring using a hammer would be after hours use at a time. What weight of drop would be necessary to clean cut that grade of wire used in that chain?
1 Answer
Unfortunately we do not have specific information regarding the use of this cutter and the chain you have. But, since this cutter is rated to cut up to 3/4" wire rope, it should have no problem cutting your #16 chain. The only possible issue could be if the chain is too small and soft, it may binder where the blade sinks into the base, but we would not have a way of testing that.
