What does all that writing on it mean?

Well, there are various pieces of information.  The kN markings indicate the strength of the pulley.  The CE and UIAA markings in the lower right refer to different standards with which the pulley is compliant.  The 16mm refers to the max rope diameter to be used with the pulley.  Please let us know if you have other specific questions not answered here.

Pulleys are critical pieces of equipment. You need a pulley rated for your intended load plus a safety factor. Kns are measurements of applied force. For example a 15kN rating equals approximately 3,300 Lbs. You want a decent safety factor to make sure that the pulley doesn't fail under a shock load. The pulley itself needs to be designed for the diameter of the rope passed around it. Certifications such as CE or NFPA 1983 mean that the device's design has been tested and accepted under applicable safety standards - as opposed to a pulley that may be only suitable for utility loads. Our rescue team has used these pulleys for years, sometimes in very adverse conditions, and they have performed quite well. In fact I came across this question when I logged on the site to order more pulleys for a new rescue systems kit.
