Product Description

This is Laclede's take on a security chain, which they call "Lockdown Chain". It sells extremely well, and since Laclede changed their heat treating process to make this chain even harder--62-65 HRC--we are confident it's going to sell better than ever! People simply trust the Laclede brand. They are a domestic manufacturer of many types of chain, including high-quality overhead lifting chain, tie down chains and tire traction chains. You can literally find their chains in use all over this great country--construction sites, passenger cars, marine applications, you name it, Laclede is there. They are adaptive too, willing to make changes with their engineering to keep up with modern demands. For example, their Lockdown Chain used to be thru-hardened but with a lower HRC rating. Laclede's design team determined their chain would be even tougher to cut being case-hardened yet with a much higher HRC rating. They brought this change to market quickly, and now have a security chain that stacks up against ANY competitor.

What Size is This Chain?
At 1/2" (13mm) in diameter, it is the biggest, beefiest security chain we offer. Made from quenched and tempered alloy steel with an electro-galvanized finish. It is worth noting that Laclede is the primary chain manufacturer we use for building Grade 100 chain slings because we trust their quality so much. This chain is available by the foot with quantity discounts available, or in kits paired with Laclede's super tough padlock.

  • Square, case-hardened links
  • Made from quenched and tempered alloy steel
  • Electro-galvanized finish for corrosion protection
  • Designed for securing valuables such as construction equipment, trailers, ATVs and water crafts
  • Chain Hardness: 62-65 HRC

Can bolt cutters cut this chain?
1 Answer
We can't give a firm, 100% yes or no, because we haven't tested every bolt cutter out there.  It's our understanding that there are some pretty amazing, really heavy-duty bolt cutters if you know where to get them.  BUT, in testing with our 42" bolt cutters mounted to a floor vise, the answer is no.  We barely scuffed the chain actually.

I have a saltwater boat that I need to secure. Will the Laclede 1/2" chain and lock perform in the salt environment? Also, can I get a round slip through ring added to one end like Abus offers?
1 Answer
Unfortunately we would have to say no, and no.  The chain and padlock do offer some corrosion resistance, but if exposed directly to salt water for a prolonged period, we would expect them to rust.  And the loop feature is only available from Abus.

What is the largest diameter shackle that will fit through a mid chain link?
1 Answer
You can fit a 7/16" shackle through the middle of the chain, pin only, not the ears.  In the end link you can fit a 1/2" shackle, pin or ear orientation.

Does this chain rust?  How resistant is it against corrosion?
1 Answer
This chain is galvanized and handles the elements quite well.  If placed in a marine environment for an extended period of time, it will develop surface rust, which should be easily removed if the chain is maintained.

I noticed you have 2 sizes of "chafe sleeves" available for this product.  I'm assuming those measurements are the "widths" of the sleeve.  Just curious why 2 different widths?  Is one a relatively "tight" fit and the other relatively "loose"?
1 Answer
Yes, that's pretty much the case.  Before we offered the 13mm chain, 12mm was the largest size and CS212W fit pretty well.  Once we introduced the 13mm chain, some customers wanted a sleeve with a little more play that was easier to install, thus the CS312W option.  More details can be found in the item descriptions.

Saw a vid of cutting both sides of a Pewag 12mm in about 130 seconds with an angle grinder and another of cutting same chain in about 55 seconds with a die grinder. Being through hardened, would this chain give more resistance to a grinder?
1 Answer
This chain is no longer through hardened.  To compare more "apples to apples" to their competition, Laclede redesigned the chain and raised the outer HRC to rival Pewag.  But, a chain with such a high HRC number cannot be through hardened, it would simply be too brittle.  We do not have an exact time to give you for how long it might take to cut one vs. the other, but if they have the same HRC rating and one is slightly bigger than the other, we would assume the bigger chain would take just a little longer to cut.

The chain is rated at Case-Hardness: 62-65 HRC. Can you tell me the Thru-Hardness rating?
1 Answer
The inside of the chain is in the 40-50 HRC range. The entire chain cannot be in the 62-65 HRC range because it would become far too brittle.

For security chain, without a lock, do I click quantity to add feet?
1 Answer
To order this chain by the foot, simply enter the quantity you want in the box, then hit Add to Cart. For example, if you want 5ft, then simply add "5" to the quantity box. If you want several cut pieces, then add to the total amount to the box, and then at checkout tell us what cut lengths you desire. Please bear in mind we do charge a cutting fee for multiple cuts of chain.

Is this chain as good as Pewag's 1/2" chain?
1 Answer
Well, that's tough for us to answer and we try not to take sides. But given the specs on this new chain, we have to say it is every bit as good. The HRC rating is there, along with a galvanized finish. It's also 1mm larger, which could be considered good or bad. The real kicker is that it's thru-hardened. Really, you can't go wrong with either option. Pewag and Laclede both make great chain.

Will this chain fit with the Pewag/Viro padlock #PW-4153?
1 Answer
No, this chain is 13mm, and just slightly too big. We recommend using it with Laclede's padlock, #LAC-8204-100-04 or #LAC-8204-101-04.

Excellent Chain For Lockdown

This Laclede chain is without question a high quality product. The size alone would have thieves moving on to a different target, the chain is that big and intimidating. I highly recommend.

13mm Hardened Chain

This security chain is off the hook. If you have anything with extreme value, this chain is a must have. This is perfect for heavy equipment, anything that's worth thousands of dollars.
  • This chain is off the hook, intimidating. This must be the chain that was holding down King Kong!!!
  • This is a home security chain, not something you want to carry in your backpack.

Great Security Chain
February 28, 2018
Great security chain. Similar price to Pewag but this chain is through hardened and slightly thicker. I actually bought this as a kit with the lock but wanted to leave separate reviews for each. I also purchased the 1 3/4" nylon sleeve to go over this chain. Fits great, but is not easy to get on if you have a long section to do. I ordered 10' of each and the fit was perfect with about 2 1/2 links of chain sticking out of each end. Will be locking up motorcycles with this chain and the extra piece of mind is well worth the cost over cheaper products.
  • Made in America, through hardened, thick links, very strong.
  • Can't slip links through each other to use normal shielded padlocks.
